TDLR License Lookup: Check a Texas Electrician or A/C License

By Dale Morgan · Updated 2026-10-18 · Every fact links to its official source.

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) publishes license records for electricians and air conditioning and refrigeration contractors, among others. Checking a license before you hire takes a minute. You can use TDLR's own search or our lookup, which is built from the official TDLR open-data file.

Checking a Texas license. A general outline only; the order and requirements differ by jurisdiction — see the verified facts below.
  1. Ask for the license number.
  2. Search our Texas license lookup or the official TDLR license search.
  3. Check the status. In our lookup, status is derived from the expiration date in the TDLR file. Confirm on TDLR for anything important.
  4. Match the license type to the job. A journeyman, master or contractor license means different things. The verified rules below explain them.
  5. Note the date you checked.

Note: Texas plumbing licenses are issued by a separate board, the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners, and are not in TDLR's file. See how to become a plumber for verified Texas plumbing facts.
