Moving for work is common in the electrical trade, and the first worry is usually "will my license still count?" Sometimes the answer is yes, with a simple application. Sometimes it means a new exam. And sometimes there's no agreement at all and you start the process again.
This guide explains the terms you'll run into, then lists what each state and province's official pages say about recognizing out-of-jurisdiction licenses. The explanations are ours. Every reciprocity statement is quoted from a fact our editor verified, with the official link beside it.
Key terms
- Reciprocity: a formal agreement in which one jurisdiction accepts another's license, sometimes with conditions.
- Endorsement / license by credentials: you apply individually and the board reviews your license, exam and experience.
- Red Seal (Canada): an interprovincial standard endorsement for trades. See our Red Seal guide.

If your state isn't listed
That means we haven't verified a reciprocity statement for it yet, not that none exists. Before you move, contact the board and ask three things: whether it accepts your current license, which exam (if any) you would need to take, and whether experience from your current jurisdiction counts toward its requirements. Get the answer in writing if you can. It will save you time later.
How to use this guide

- To check whether a specific person or company holds a license, use our license lookup (TX, CA, WA, OR, NY and Québec RBQ data) or the board's own search.
